Breaking Apart

On Tuesday night Mia came to me with big, sad eyes. I said, "Oh Mia, what's the matter? You look so sad?"

She tearfully replied, "Mommy I'm breaking apart!"

I looked at her with great sympathy and said, "Oh Mia, I know JUST how you feel. Sometimes Mommy feels like I'm breaking apart too! You are just very tired and need a good night's sleep."

She shook her head and said, "No, I'm really breaking apart - I cut my lip this morning, I scraped my leg and now my little toe has a cut!" And she began to weep.

I took her in my arms and said, "Mia tonight I will hold you while we sleep and I will help you stop breaking apart and feel better."

With a sniffle and a back of the hand wipe across her eyes she sweetly and sincerely said, "Thank you Mommy, but you're not God. You CAN'T put me back together. But you can ask God to do that while you hold me!"

Oh the wisdom of a child even in the midst of pain! May we always remember that there is only one who can, will and wants to put us back together!
