Shoes
A few weeks ago I forgot to check my shoes. It was late, I was tired, the house was dark, the kids were sleeping, I just wanted to be comfortable and relax. I had changed into my pajamas and was ready to trade in my day shoes for my comfortable slippers. And I forgot to do the most important thing I ALWAYS do before wearing my slippers. I guess I was too tired to think or maybe it was just laziness. The reason isn't really all the important, but the result is. I put my foot into a black, closed toe slipper that had been sitting in my dark closet all day without first shaking it out to make sure it was empty. And guess what? IT WASN'T!! As soon as my toes crowded into the crushed velvet toe of the slipper I felt a hard body and quick feet and knew there was something climbing up my pants. I shreiked, flicked my foot and sent the slipper AND the cockroach flying against the wall. The slipper slid to the ground and the cockroach went scurrying for cover. I recovered from my fright while remaining motionless and calling to Steve, "Quick get a shoe and KILL IT NOW! Hurry up! Don't let it get away! Look at the size of that thing IT'S HUGE!" Moments later I shuddered at the squished corpse of the ugly bug who had dared to rest in MY shoes and I prayed that his family and friends would heed the warning that none of them should show their ugly little faces. Unfortunately I can't say we've been cockroach free since then, but I did relearn my lesson and I haven't forgotten to check my shoes!
